BPC-157

BPC-157 is a pentadecapeptide: a chain of fifteen amino acids with a molecular weight of approximately 1419.53 g/mol. The sequence is derived from a portion of a protective protein that occurs naturally in gastric juice.

Mechanism of action under investigation

Preclinical research is investigating the role of BPC-157 in processes relating to tissue structure and the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis). Among other things, researchers are studying its interaction with growth factors and signalling pathways involved in tissue maintenance, including the VEGF pathway. As the peptide is relatively stable in an aqueous and acidic environment — which is consistent with its origin in the gastric mucosa — it is suitable for reproducible experiments.

Important: these mechanisms are based on laboratory and animal studies. They describe what is being investigated in a research context and do not constitute evidence of efficacy in humans. No therapeutic claims are made in this regard.

BPC-157 is one of the most extensively studied research peptides. The majority of the preclinical literature originates from the research group led by Predrag Sikiric at the University of Zagreb, which has been studying the peptide in various animal models since the 1990s.

Status of human research

BPC-157 has not been approved as a medicinal product by the FDA, the EMA or any other regulatory authority. There are only a few small pilot studies in humans; a registered Phase 1 trial was discontinued, meaning that research into the substance is predominantly preclinical. Furthermore, since 2022, BPC-157 has been on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) Prohibited List. For research purposes, reproducibility and documented purity are therefore more important than isolated claims; always check the relevant laboratory certificate for a specific batch.

BPC-157 is supplied as a lyophilised powder which is reconstituted in the laboratory using bacteriostatic water. The steps below describe only the laboratory procedures for research purposes.

1. 1Allow the vial and the bacteriostatic water to reach room temperature.
2. 2Wipe the rubber stoppers of both vials with an alcohol wipe.
3. 3Draw up the required volume of bacteriostatic water and allow it to run slowly down the side of the peptide vial.
4. 4Gently swirl the vial until the powder has completely dissolved. Do not shake.
5. 5Store the reconstituted solution in a cool place and label it with the date and batch number.

Store BPC-157 in its lyophilised (powder) form in a cool, dark place. The peptide is most stable when unopened and in its lyophilised state.

Practical storage tips

• Powder form: for long-term storage, store preferably in the freezer (-20 °C); the fridge (2–8 °C) is sufficient for short-term storage.
• After reconstitution: store the solution in the fridge (2–8 °C) and use it within a few weeks.
• Protect the vial from light, heat and repeated temperature fluctuations.
• Write the reconstitution date and the batch number on the vial.
